Abstract

Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) proved to be an efficient tool in our modern geographical and geological studies. This study demonstrates the extraction of morphological parameters of a river lying in water-stressed Bundelkhand region using remote sensing and GIS techniques. SOI toposheets and latest Landsat-8 data were used to evaluate the morphometric analysis. In this study Bagain river basin has been selected which is a tributary of river Yamuna. The morphometric analysis includes aspects as linear, areal and relief. It has been found that the region is covered with high altitude Vindhyan hills. There is a large number of drainage systems originated from south and goes to north and downpours in the Yamuna River. River basins shows dendritic, parallel and Trellis patter with moderate drainage texture. High bifurcation ratio indicates that the geologic structures did distorted or disturbed the drainage network. Logarithm of number of stream vs. stream order show deviation from straight line indicating regional upliftment. In spite of mountainous relief, low drainage density values indicate that the area is underlain by impermeable sub-surface material. The study provided an account of information about drainage pattern, stream behaviour and morphometric setting of drainage within the network helping for watershed management.
