Abstract

The presence of high total dissolved gas (TDG) downstream of a spillway may make fish bubble illness more common. Because of the increased water depth and reduced turbulence in reservoirs, supersaturated TDG is transported and dispersed more slowly than in natural rivers, putting fish in danger. The operating restrictions for mitigating the impact of TDG supersaturation on fish in the Bala Reservoir on the Zumuzu River are presented in this study. The paper includes the joint operations of the upstream and downstream power stations. To simulate TDG transportation and dissipation, hydrodynamics, and water temperature in the Bala Reservoir, a laterally averaged two-dimensional model is used. This study proposes a regulatory scheme based on a comparison of simulation results from various operational scenarios. To minimize the harmful effect of supersaturated TDG on the reservoir, it is recommended that the upstream power plant use an interval-discharge pattern rather than a continuous-discharge strategy. It is recommended that the release structure for the downstream power station be a surface tunnel rather than a bottom tunnel. This document serves as a guide for operating big and deep reservoirs in an environmentally friendly manner.
