Abstract

Anitis is an inflammation of the anal and perianal zone, and proctitis involve the lining of the rectum respectively. Despite both are frequent clinical conditions, it is not easy to define and sometimes it is not considered in diagnostic therapeutic terms. Anitis/Proctitis would include all inflammatory and infectious lesions. We believe that nutraceutical can find a correct and innovative space with excellent clinical results in this pathological field. In this work we provide information about the action of the components of Calabrian bergamot, and also on the use of a gelatinous mixture based on bergamot flavonoids and essential oil used in the treatment of non-specific proctitis. From January 2019 to January 2020, a total of 178 patients (95 M -83 F) with a mean age of 53 years (range 24-76 y) were treated with local gel derived from bergamot. 94% of patients reported symptom relief at T1 with well-being maintained at T2 in 89%. The mean satisfaction rate after treatment was 8.2 (range 6-10). The mean VAS pain score before treatment was 6 and decreased to 2 after treatment at T2. Clinical evaluation performed with Digital Videoproctoscope showed a decrease in bleeding in 78.9% and relative hyperemia in 79.6%. The results of this study suggested that the administration of local bergamot gel had an anti-inflammatory effect with a faster healing process.
