Gingiva refers to the structure present in the oral cavity that surrounds the tooth. Just Like a normal healthy gingiva exists, so do exists the gingival inflammation. Sometimes the inflammation of gingiva leads to the condition called as gingival enlargement or gingival hyperplasia. Gingival enlargement is caused by various conditions like because of inflammation, pregnancy, puberty, nutritional deficiency, leukemia, and sometimes during orthodontic treatment. During the phase of Orthodontic treatment, most of the patients find it difficult to maintain their oral hygiene as a result of which there is plaque accumulation which results either in gingival inflammation, which if not treated on time can eventually leads to gingival enlargement resulting in suprabony pockets or pseudopockets formation. Gingivectomy is the treatment of choice for this type of gingival enlargement as it helps in the reduction or elimination of pseudopockets, suprabony pockets, which is common in orthodontic induced gingival enlargement. This Chapter had focused light on what are the indications, contraindications of gingivectomy and the gingivectomy procedure to manage the gingival enlargement for the patient at the time of Orthodontic Treatment.
